As part of a broader effort to enhance service efficiency across Somerset, residents of Wells are advised to watch for important updates regarding waste collection changes.

These adjustments, affecting many households in the former Mendip district, are set to begin from Monday, 17 June 2024.

The changes are being implemented by SUEZ recycling and recovery UK and are designed to optimize route efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, and keep operational costs in check, all at no extra cost to the council.

Households experiencing changes in their rubbish collection days or frequency—still maintained at every three weeks—will be notified via a letter due to arrive in early May.

This letter will include a new service guide and a collection day calendar to help residents prepare for the shift.

For those not receiving a letter by the end of May, there will be no change to their current collection schedules, although they will still receive the new service guide and calendar.

The existing garden waste collection schedule will remain unchanged, and there are no alterations to clinical waste and communal property collections.

Councillor Dixie Darch, Executive Lead Member for Climate and Environment, highlighted the positive impacts of these changes: "Changes to recycling and rubbish collections have been designed to make the routes more manageable for crews, as well as being more environmentally friendly and cost effective. Look out for your letter and service guide and take note of your collection day. If you don't receive a letter this means that your day is staying the same. The changes come at no additional cost to the council and will help towards making the county greener and more sustainable. Please make a note of your new collection day and possible interim rubbish collection. Crews can't return for missed collections where bins are not out on the right day."
