Wells archaeology event opens up Vicars' Close
By Laura Linham 17th Jul 2026
A free archaeology event will invite visitors to explore the hidden history of Vicars' Close in Wells from Monday, 20 July, to Thursday, 23 July. The event is being held as part of the Festival of Archaeology and will run from 10 am to 4 pm each day.
Visitors will be able to watch excavations in action across garden trial pits, meet the archaeology team and take part in hands-on activities. Organisers say people can drop in for five minutes or stay all day, with activities suitable for all ages.
The event forms part of the Vicars' Close Project, which is working to protect one of Europe's most significant medieval streets. The street is described by the project as the oldest continuously inhabited medieval street in Europe still used for its original purpose.
The project has been made possible with support from National Lottery players and The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Organisers are also asking people to support the work by donating online.
Admission to the archaeology event is free and everyone is welcome. It will take place daily from 10 am to 4 pm between Monday, 20 July, and Thursday, 23 July.
