Wells is set to launch a new youth council this autumn after city councillors agreed to move ahead with the scheme. The decision was made at a Wells City Council meeting on Thursday, 25 June, with work expected to begin with local schools when the new academic year starts in September.

The new group is intended to give young people in Wells a clearer route into local decision-making. Council minutes say the proposal grew out of work begun while Jasmine Browne was mayor.

Councillors backed the plan unanimously. The youth council is expected to meet between four and six times a year, after Mayor Denise Denis suggested the original proposal of six meetings should be made more flexible.

The move means Wells could soon have a formal body for younger residents to raise issues, share ideas and take part in civic life. The council will now begin working with schools ahead of the youth council being established.
