If the usual Wells routine is beginning to feel a little too usual, the local jobs board has a few alternatives. Some are sensible career moves, some involve alarm clocks at deeply unreasonable hours, and some come with salaries that may persuade you to update the CV after all. This week we've widened the net across Glastonbury, Street and Shepton Mallet too, because good jobs have never shown much respect for patch boundaries.

On the road, before most of us are properly conscious

If you fancy earning around the rest of your life rather than arranging your life around a rota, Just Eat is looking for Delivery Riders using a car in Glastonbury. It's self-employed, flexible work with weekly pay, and no previous delivery experience is needed. You'll need to be 18 or over, have a smartphone and your own car with the right licence and insurance — which, admittedly, rules out trying to do the whole thing on a borrowed pushbike and optimism.

There's a similar Delivery Rider - Scooter role in Glastonbury, also with Just Eat. Again, you choose when you work, which could suit anyone after a side hustle, a few extra hours or simply an escape route from the traditional Monday-to-Friday grind.

Over in Street and Wells, News Team Group is looking for Morning Delivery Drivers to get newspapers and magazines out to homes and businesses while sensible people are still considering whether to hit snooze. The work is self-employed and aimed at reliable drivers who don't regard an early start as a personal attack.

For people who can manage things without losing the plot

If you're good at managing projects, people and Outlook reminders, there's a Contracts Manager role covering the Somerset area at around £50,000 plus vehicle and benefits. It's with a specialist infrastructure services business and involves keeping contracts and operational teams moving in roughly the same direction — no small feat once multiple sites and multiple opinions are involved.

In Street, Clarks is after a Digital Performance Marketing Manager, with either a permanent or fixed-term contract on offer and hybrid working. You'd be working across its UK and European ecommerce operation, so this is one for someone comfortable with data, campaigns, conversions and explaining why a number going up is good without producing a 46-slide deck about it.

There's also a rather bigger chair available at Clarks for a Head of Commercial Finance, UK & Rest of Europe. It's a senior leadership role in Street, aimed at someone who can mix finance with commercial decision-making across the UK and European business. If your spreadsheet skills currently peak at colour-coding the household budget, perhaps keep scrolling.

Food jobs, because Somerset does know its way around a factory

In Shepton Mallet, a food manufacturer is looking for a Development Technologist on £33,000 to £36,000, Monday to Friday. You'd be part of the new product development team, helping turn ideas into things that can actually be made, packed and sent out into the world rather than remaining "concepts" on a whiteboard forever.

If you've already been around that particular block a few times, there's also a Senior Process Development Technologist role paying up to £44,000 plus benefits. This one takes products from concept through to commercial production, bridging that awkward gap between "this tastes lovely in the development kitchen" and "can we make several thousand of them before lunch?"

More at home with engines than emulsifiers? Shepton Mallet also has a Workshop HGV Engineer vacancy. One for people who can look at an enormous vehicle making an expensive noise and have a considerably more useful reaction than the rest of us.

Jobs where people matter more than spreadsheets

There's a rather different sort of opportunity around Shepton Mallet, where Day Care Hosts are wanted to welcome small groups of older people into their homes for socially interactive friendship days. Groups are made up of four people and can run for up to two full days a week, so it could suit somebody sociable, compassionate and blessed with both a welcoming front room and a dependable kettle.

A Support Worker is also being recruited in Castle Cary, adding another care role to this week's mix. For anyone who prefers a working day centred on people rather than targets, dashboards and someone asking whether you've "seen the email below", it may be worth a look.

At the other end of the qualification scale, there's a Consultant Anaesthetist role in Shepton Mallet. That one rather speaks for itself — and if you're qualified to apply, you're almost certainly not relying on this paragraph for career guidance.

Boots on, hard hat on

Anyone happiest when there's a site to run rather than a desk to sit behind might be interested in a Site Manager role linked to Bruton, paying up to £230 a day on a long-term temporary contract. The work is in planned external maintenance and social housing, so expect contractors, schedules, snagging lists and the traditional British construction challenge of trying to organise anything outdoors without first consulting three weather apps.
