Wells parade to honour former town crier Len Sweales
By Laura Linham 17th Jul 2026
Former Wells town crier Len Sweales will be honoured with a civic parade and public proclamation in the Market Place on Saturday, 18 July. The ceremony will mark his 25 years of dedicated service to the city.
The parade is due to begin at 1.30 pm, with residents invited to line the route through the Market Place. A formal proclamation will then be made from the Town Hall balcony at 2.20 pm.
The event will take place alongside the regular Saturday Wells Market, with its independent traders continuing throughout the city centre. Wells City Council said everyone was welcome to witness what it described as a "historic occasion".
"We hope to see lots of people lining the parade route to help the wonderful Len Sweales celebrate," the council said.
Len was appointed Wells town crier in 2001 and became one of the city's most recognisable civic figures. He retired from the role in May after making his final official cry in the Market Place. (Wells Nub News)
During his time in the role, he represented Wells at local, regional and national events while supporting charities and promoting the city. The Freedom of the City is being awarded in recognition of that contribution. (Wells Nub News)
The parade will begin at 1.30 pm on Saturday, with the proclamation following at 2.20 pm. No ticket is required, and the ceremony will take place in Wells Market Place.
