Vikings are preparing to invade Wells — although this time the Bishop's Palace knows they are coming.

The Bishop's Palace and Gardens will welcome re-enactment group Draca Beordor on Saturday, 12 September, for a full day of Viking living history from 9.30 am to 5.30 pm.

The event forms part of the Palace's History Alive series, which brings historical re-enactors into the grounds for immersive family days.

Visitors will be able to wander through a Viking encampment and get a flavour of everyday life in Viking England, rather than simply watching history from the sidelines.

Domestic crafts and camp cooking will sit alongside military drills and skirmishes, with costumed re-enactors demonstrating different sides of life from the period.

The idea is to bring the sights, sounds and atmosphere of a Viking camp into the historic Palace grounds, with visitors able to meet the people taking part and find out more about the lives they are recreating.

It is not all swords and shields either. The living-history element will look at the practical, domestic side of Viking life as well as the rather more dramatic business of preparing for battle.

The event is included with admission to the Bishop's Palace, as well as with Annual Passes and Friends of the Palace membership.

Visitors can also explore the medieval Palace buildings and Undercroft, alongside the 14 acres of gardens surrounding the site.

The Viking re-enactment takes place at The Bishop's Palace and Gardens on Saturday, 12 September from 9.30 am to 5.30 pm.
