Stoberry Park School in Wells retains 'Good' Ofsted rating
Stoberry Park School in Wells has maintained its 'good' status following an Ofsted inspection on 24 and 25 January 2024.
The report said that pupils take pride in attending a "warm and welcoming school," where attendance figures are on the rise, showcasing a strong community spirit.
The school's ethos, built around values of "integrity, compassion, creativity, courage, and curiosity," resonates well with students, affirming their sense of belonging and engagement in school life.
The report highlighted concerns over curriculum development, particularly in early reading, where teaching methods have yet to effectively boost students' fluency and confidence. Additionally, instances of low-level disruption have been reported as affecting the learning environment, contributing to gaps in student knowledge.
Despite these challenges, Stoberry Park School has proactively engaged external advisors to refine its curriculum, focusing on creating a more structured and rigorous approach to early reading. The mathematics curriculum was praised for its well-planned and sequenced structure, serving as a model for other subjects within the school.
The school was commended for offering a wealth of learning experiences outside the classroom, fostering an environment where "curiosity and creativity" thrive, especially during social times. Notable trips and activities, including visits to the Roman Baths and Legoland, as well as maintaining international connections through pen pals in Germany, contribute to a well-rounded educational experience.
Acknowledging the need for improvement, school leaders and governors are aware of the strengths and weaknesses within the institution. Efforts to refine the curriculum with the aid of external advisors have commenced, focusing mainly on subjects beyond mathematics, which is highlighted as a well-planned and effectively sequenced area of study.
The inspection report emphasises the urgent need for a more structured and rigorous approach to phonics teaching, noting that some students are not receiving the support necessary to progress in their reading. The school is encouraged to ensure that all staff are adequately trained and that the teaching of early reading is more systematically enforced.
Engagement with the community and extracurricular activities are strengths of Stoberry Park School. Students enjoy a variety of clubs and are active in raising funds for various charities, showcasing their developing sense of responsibility and community spirit.
Parents have expressed positive feedback regarding recent changes, with staff appreciating their involvement in the school's journey towards improvement. As Stoberry Park School looks to the future, the focus remains on enhancing curriculum design and teaching methodologies and ensuring a disruption-free learning environment for all students.
