Wells Rugby march on with fourth win in a row

Tor 10 – Wells 27.

Whisper it quietly, but this was Wells' fourth win in a row and sees them climb another place in the Tribute Somerset Premier League, now fifth.

The game itself, however, was messy, disjointed and only entertaining if you were a Wells supporter, many of whom had made the short trip to Lowerside Lane in Glastonbury for this first derby for seven years.

After hours of rain the pitch did not help, but there was little excuse for the numerous penalties which occurred more than regularly, virtually all for technical offences.

There was just one yellow card against Tor in the first half and yet they went on to give away at least ten more in the second period. Apparently the referee spoke to both captains, threatening to abandon the game.

Tor had opened the scoring after 20 minutes and their excellent defence kept Wells at bay until the half an hour was up.

It was once again a tap down at the lineout which put Al Knight in, in the corner. With half time beckoning, the rampaging Al Payne was awarded a try after Wells had once again won a penalty at a scrum. Half time Wells ten, Tor five.

Wells applied a lot of pressure early in the second period but nearly 15 minutes had passed before they got their reward with skipper Jamie Payne scoring the try.

Tor now had their best period of the game and scored when the ball went across the line from a lineout.

The sun came out to brighten up this dull affair, but Wells were suffering injuries. Both centres, Sam Garret and Matt Greenman were forced off, plus Mike Dimaline from the back row.

Despite the disruption Wells again dominated and Sean Heggarty scored a rare try. A big cheer as Aaron Cook's conversion went over and a final word at the end. A misdirected cross kick hit an upright. Jason Attwood pounced for the fifth try.

Wells Rugby Club would like to thank the talented utilty back, Oskar White for his work at the club, and wish him good luck in his new adventure.

This Saturday November 16 Wells are away again and expect a tough test when they travel to Yatton.
