Wells 17 – Oldfield Old Boys 8

There were some tricks by Wells and some treats for the spectators as the homeside put in there best performance of the season so far with an excellent victory over their visitors from Bath, Oldfield Old Boys. The game played last Thursday evening was actually under the lights at Tor and Wells must offer their thanks to the Glastonbury club for the use of their facilities and the excellent pitch.

Oldfield came with a one hundred per cent record having won all their matches to date, but Wells have been on the up in recent weeks and this time took another step forward. Both teams had their moments in the early stages, but defences were firm. There were twenty six minutes on the clock when the deadlock was broken, Jason Attwood was the recepient of an Al Knight pass to score in the corner. Again a period of end to end rugby, but with just a couple of minutes to the interval a lineout catch and drive saw Al Payne awarded the try. Half time, Wells 10, Oldfield Old Boys 0.

A try after ten minutes of the re-start brought the visitors back into the game and then just a few minutes later Wells conceded a penalty. A bit of chat to the referee, the kick advanced ten metres and over it went. Close now, ten points to eight.

However, within minutes Wells had stretched the lead. A bit of trickery at the lineout and there was hooker Al Knight streaking down the touch line to add to his huge collection of tries. Aaron Cook added the two points and there was a bit of breathing space.

Twenty seven minutes to go, no more points but a great display by both teams. Defences were stretched, but not broken, kicks rained down from the night sky, but all were safely gathered. So Wells edge up another place in the league table, now sixth.

Next Saturday, 9 November, Wells travel to Tor again. This time to play the local side in the first derby for over seven years, kick off 2.30.
