St Bernadettes Old Boys 24 – Wells RFC 45.

It is 19 months since Wells last won away from home, so this resounding result in Bristol against St Bernadettes Old Boys was a great fillip to the team and indeed ones hopes for the remainder of the season to come.

It also moved them up from bottom to tenth place in the Tribute Somerset Premier League table.

One has to say that in the early stages it was a very competitive game. Jordan Krause went over in the sixth minute for Wells, Aaron Cook converting, but the hosts soon hit back with a try of their own.

Wells edged ahead again with a Mike Dimaline try, but again the Old Boys scored with a converted try.

Debutant Jack Ealey was next on the scoreboard with a try on the right wing and then Jason Attwood on the other wing got in on the act.

A final try just before half time by Sam Garrett, all three being converted by Cook saw Wells take their score at the interval to 31, against the home team's 12.

For the first 20 minutes of the second half, Wells seemed to go into coast mode. They conceded two converted tries which brought St Bernadettes up to 24 points, just a converted try behind and looking in some danger of throwing the game away.

However, second row Krause calmed things down with his second try and right at the end, Alex Payne put the gloss on the score with a try under the posts. Aaron Cook converted both to bring his tally to five conversions.

In the main this was an excellent team performance, but there are a few deserving of special mention.

Tom Payne, superb in the lineout, also covered acres of ground around the field. Fullback Oskar White, supports the attack at every opportunity and always looks dangerous with ball in hand.

And finally, another debutant, 17-year-old Luke Dunthorne at scrum half. A most assured performance which earned him the players' vote for man of the match.

This week, Wells are home to Stothert and Pitt, kick off 3pm.
