There was Friday night football fun for Wells City yesterday (October 18) as they ran out 4-1 winners against Oldland Abbotonian, after dominating the second half.

Their first goal came after only three minutes, when great play by Paul Braithwaite down the right saw him clip a ball into Craig Herrod whose shot was blocked, but Kieran Davis timed his run perfectly and he unleashed a thunderbolt from 25 yards which left the keeper stranded as it flew into the top corner.

After five minutes Harvey Hadrill did well to evade two tackles before feeding the ball into Herrod, who then glided in from the right and danced through the challenges before his low shot was well saved.

Wells conceded a penalty on 10 minutes when Tom Hill lost the ball 25 yards out and Ben Amghar was harshly adjudged to have fouled the Oldland striker in the area. The Oldland number 6 slotted the spot kick under Harrison Veale to make it 1-1.

However, City regained the lead on 25 minutes when Braithwaite whipped a great ball in from the right which was met with a towering header by Dale Hunt to score.

Then on 38 minutes some Herrod wizardry saw him get into the box and lay the ball off to Harry Foster who calmly sent the keeper the wrong way from eight yards to extend Wells lead.

Into added time of the first half and the Oldland number 8 picked up the ball unmarked from 25 yards and fired a shot inches wide.

After 57 minutes a 20 yard free kick by Hill was well held.

Wells made the game safe on 68 minutes when some sublime individual skill by Hill saw him win the ball back, then turn his opponent before having the composure to see the keeper off his line and lob him from all of 30 yards.

On 78 minutes great link up play with Hunt, Herrod and Foster saw Ross Padfield let fly from 20 yards and the keeper parried for a defender to clear.

The last 10 minutes saw a flurry of yellow cards and a sin bin for Oldlands as they lost their composure and started to put in some poor challenges, but the full time ended up Wells City 4-1 Oldland Abbotonian.

The first half scoreline flattered Wells as Oldland for a large part were dominant and had chances, but the second half was all Wells and they were far too strong for the visitors and deservedly took the three points.

Things don't get any easier as Wells entertain local rivals Cheddar on Tuesday night (October 22) with a 7.30pm kick off.
