RESIDENTS of Wells snapped up 18 unique stone sculptures on Bank Holiday Monday as Wells Stone Carving Festival culminated in an exciting and competitive live auction outside the Bishop's Barn on Wells Recreation Ground.

The 18 carvings were produced by artists from across the country, including the winner of the European stone carving festival in 2017 and masons from Winchester Cathedral, who had come to compete at the festival by producing a carving in just two and a half days to fit the brief of Medieval England.

TWO events held in the Wells area for GeoWeek were enjoyed by all who took part.

Twenty-one people joined Doug Robinson and Chris King for the two-hour tour of the building stone heritage in Wells on May 5.

The building stones all came from the Mendip area on the city's doorstep, and tell amazing geological stories of the region's 200 million year journey from the southern tropics across the equator into northern latitudes.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service received a call reporting a fire at the above location.

Whilst proceeding to the incident, the first appliance confirmed a large fire which they believed to be a workshop and immediately made pumps 4. This additional appliance was sent from Wells along with a specialist support officer.
