Wells City has witnessed a marginal decline in crime rates in January 2024 compared to the previous month, according to the latest statistics.

The figures for January show a total of 69 crimes recorded, a slight reduction from the 74 crimes noted in December 2023.

The January crime data reveals that violent crime remains the most reported category, with 26 incidents, closely followed by shoplifting, which saw a significant increase to 12 reported incidents from just 5 in December.

Other notable categories include criminal damage and arson, other theft, public order, and vehicle crime, each recording 6 incidents. There were also lower levels of anti-social behaviour (3), bicycle theft (1), burglary (1), and other crime (2) reported.

In comparison, December's statistics showed higher instances of anti-social behaviour (8), burglary (4), and other theft (10), alongside 8 public order incidents.

The month also recorded a singular drugs offence, two instances of robbery, and one theft from the person, categories that were not reported in January.

A spokesperson for the Wells police commented on the figures, saying: "We are cautiously optimistic about the slight reduction in crime rates from December to January. Particularly, the drop in anti-social behaviour and burglary is encouraging. However, the rise in shoplifting incidents is concerning, and we are implementing targeted strategies to address this.

"Our focus remains on working closely with the community to deter crime and ensure Wells remains a safe place for residents and visitors alike."
