Wells has been ranked as one of the most accessible cities in the UK in a new national study released this week.
The city placed 6th overall in the Top 20 Most Accessible Cities index published by CareCo. The list was compiled using data on wheelchair and mobility scooter access to restaurants, attractions, toilets, accommodation and parking.
The research gave each UK city a population-adjusted score based on the availability of accessible facilities. Wells was the highest-ranked Somerset location and one of only a handful of small cities to make the top ten.
St Davids in Wales topped the list, followed by St Asaph, Inverness, Chichester and Bangor. Wells ranked ahead of larger destinations including York, Ely and Bath.
Local campaigners say the city's efforts to improve access are making a clear impact.
Theo van Hensbergen from Accessible Wells Campaign said: "The Bishop's Palace has made numerous adjustments over the past few years to make themselves a very accessible attraction – steps have been modified, wheelchairs and a loan scooter are available, the lift is fixed, the café door is automated, and the garden paths are passable – an outstanding example of what can be done. They deserve praise in this regard."
The full dataset and scoring methodology are available via CareCo's website.
