In response to significant budget reductions by Somerset Council, Wells City Council is taking decisive steps to ensure that CCTV services continue and public toilets remain accessible.

During the latest Finance & Council Matters Committee meeting, members tackled the financial challenges posed by Somerset Council's expensive proposal for maintaining CCTV across Wells.

To prevent the system from being decommissioned, the Council has committed £20,000 from its Unitary contingency budget.

This funding aims to keep the CCTV operational for the next 12 months.

Additionally, the fate of the Union Street toilet block was deliberated.

Faced with potential closure, the committee considered assuming full block management to handle ongoing operational costs, such as cleaning and security.

A provisional budget of £13,000 was proposed to reopen and maintain the toilets, which also received unanimous approval.
