Wells residents and visitors are advised of significant road closures and parking restrictions in place for the 2024 Wells Carnival on Friday, 15 November.
The closures aim to ensure safety for both participants and spectators during the event, with diversions and access plans in place to minimise disruption.
Key road closures and restrictions:
- Parking Restrictions:
- From 6am on Friday, 15 November, until 4am on Saturday, 16 November, there will be no parking on Tor Street (B3139) and Jocelyn Drive. Tor Street will function as the main entrance to Wells from Bishops Park Way (A371) and as the primary emergency exit route during the carnival.
- Morrisons Supermarket will have full access from the Glastonbury Road (Tincknells) roundabout until 6pm on Friday, ensuring shoppers can still reach the store before the main road closures.
- Road Closures:
- Starting at midday on Friday, 15 November, Wand Road and Knight Road will be closed, with restricted access for residents and visitors only.
- From 6pm onwards on Friday, 15 November, a full town centre closure will affect multiple key routes, including Bishops Park Way, Strawberry Way, Tucker Street, Chamberlain Street, Sadler Street, High Street, Broad Street, Priory Road, and all surrounding roads within the town centre.
- Glastonbury Road (A39) will be closed from the Tin Bridge Roundabout in Glastonbury to the Tincknells Roundabout in Wells, affecting travel in both directions toward Coxley, Polsham, and Glastonbury. A diversion route will be in place to direct traffic away from these closures.
- Bishops Park Way (A371) toward Shepton Mallet will also be closed with a diversion route via Green Ore (B3135) in effect.
- Access to Crandon Springs Care Home, Fletcher House, Wand Road Estate, and Knight Road Estate will be managed after 6pm by carnival marshalls who will escort vehicles as needed. Residents can contact Chief Marshall Nigel Clarke at [email protected] for further assistance.
Diversion routes:
Motorists are advised to follow the official diversion routes, which will be clearly signposted, to minimise disruption. The primary diversion will route traffic via Green Ore (B3135).
Local authorities recommend that residents and visitors regularly check for updates as further adjustments may be made closer to the event.
