As Wells Carnival 2024 approaches on Friday, 15th November, we not only celebrate one of the best-illuminated parades in the world but also reflect on its rich history and deep connection to the local community.
This guide will walk you through everything from road closures and transport changes to the carnival's history, the clubs involved, and where to find the best spots to enjoy the procession.
A brief history of Wells Carnival
The Wells Carnival is part of the famed Somerset Carnivals, which are rooted in centuries-old traditions dating back to the 1600s. The carnival is thought to have its origins in the celebration of Guy Fawkes Night, but it has evolved over time into an illuminated procession of themed floats, walking performances, and marching bands.
The event is a highlight of the Somerset carnival season, with Wells Carnival forming part of the Guy Fawkes Carnival Circuit, which includes other notable carnivals like Bridgwater and Glastonbury. These carnivals attract tens of thousands of visitors and participants each year, making them some of the largest illuminated processions in the world.
Local clubs and the Wells connection
The carts - often erroneously called 'floats' seen at Wells Carnival are created by local carnival clubs as well as groups from surrounding towns and villages. Each club spends months meticulously designing, building, and decorating these massive floats to fit their chosen themes, often incorporating music, lights, and dancing.
Some notable clubs involved in Wells include:
- Globe Carnival Club: Known for their intricate and historically themed floats.
- Cobra Carnival Club: Often celebrated for their creative and detailed designs.
- Mendip Vale Carnival Club: Famous for their music-inspired carts.
These clubs are community-driven, often comprising local families who have passed down the carnival tradition through generations. Fundraising and support from the local community are crucial to keep this tradition alive.

What are carnival Rest Areas?
The rest area is a designated space where participants and performers can take a break during the event. For carnival processions, these areas are especially important for those involved in the parade, such as cart participants, musicians, or dancers, who may need to rest, hydrate, and recharge between segments of the route. Rest areas typically offer seating, water, and sometimes medical aid, ensuring that participants remain safe and healthy throughout the long hours of the procession. They ensure that everyone can enjoy the experience without becoming fatigued or overheated. The rest area is marked on the map below in orange.
