What's On: Wells lines up archaeology, bingo, classical music and flirtation

What's On in Wells is brought to you by the Wells Festival of Literature — celebrating words, ideas and the art of storytelling this October.
This week in Wells you can find everything from the sublime to the slightly surreal. Fancy a bit of awkward speed dating? That's sorted. Roman roads? Tick. Space-themed family fun? Done.
And if you've got an event in Wells that isn't listed here, don't panic – you can nub your event for free right here.

Thu 2 Oct kicks off with some awkward eye contact and questionable wine chat as Speed dating returns to Sadlers Wine Bar in Wells. It's open to all and, who knows, you might leave with a number or at least a decent anecdote.
Meanwhile, the RNLI Winscombe Branch is announcing a brand refresh. It's now the RNLI Mendip Branch, which does what it says on the tin – it covers Nailsea, Wells, Shepton, Glasto and Street, for those keeping score.
On Fri 3 Oct, archaeologist David Walker is in town with The Lead Road, a talk hosted at Wells & Mendip Museum. Expect maps, Roman trivia and maybe a few rocks. It's free for WNHAS members and just £4 for the rest of us.
Sat 4 Oct is bursting with options. Benidorm Nights – Michael Bublé Tribute brings Mike Appleton to The Loft in Street for a full-on Bublé tribute, complete with signature microphone and those crooner hand gestures.

Over in Wells, the library is hosting Living in Space – a family-friendly morning of VR tours, meteorite handling and crafts. And if rocks are more your thing, Earth Expressions at the Somerset Earth Science Centre offers workshops in stone carving, printing, fossils and even a crochet ammonite session (no, really).
The weekend keeps going on Sun 5 Oct. Couples can head back to The Loft in Street for the Wedding Fair, running 11 am to 4 pm. If white dresses and overpriced canapés aren't your thing,
Leopard print bingo is happening at Sadlers in Wells, raising funds for Emma Woodcock's London Marathon run. Over at the Bath & West Showground, the Giant Flea Market delivers over 250 stalls of vintage finds, homewares, books and general rummage. Dogs allowed, wallets warned.
Mon 6 Oct brings a mystical edge to the week. Myths & Magic at St Thomas' Church in Wells offers a café-style concert by Trio Paradis – entry is free, donations welcome.
Meanwhile in Evercreech, RAFA Mid-Somerset's Fun Games Day promises darts, skittles, board games and banter for ex-RAF folk and the general public alike. Also starting Monday, Seasons of the Soul at Ammerdown Centre offers three days of spiritual reflection, poetry, creative activities and something called Visio Divina. No idea, but it sounds relaxing.

On Tue 7 Oct, Glastonbury's Lavender Vespers LGBTQ+ cabaret returns to the King Arthur, with performances from local queer artists. Doors at 7 pm, show from 8 pm, donations encouraged. If your vibe's more history and harmonies, Music of the Somerset Coalfield is on at the Somer Centre in Midsomer Norton, where Dave Byrne and the Hotwell Howlers bring old mining songs to life.
Wed 8 Oct marks the start of this year's Wells Art Contemporary, which runs through to November. The exhibition features 93 pieces, including installations in the cathedral cloisters and works by local community groups. Entry is included in your cathedral ticket, so make a day of it.
Finally, Thu 9 Oct closes the week with Unsung Women in Somerset at Glastonbury Town Hall, where author Helen Pugh shines a light on local women who made a difference – and were overlooked for it. Entry's £2 and includes refreshments, because of course it does.
Don't forget – if you're running a pub quiz, plant sale or post-apocalyptic crochet circle, you can nub your Wells event here too.
