West Mendip Walkers August walk programme

Thursday 1st August

West Mendip Walkers moderate 9 mile circular walk from Mere (BA12 6HA). We ascend Mere Castle to enjoy wonderful views. We retrace our steps to walk through open fields, past a memorial to the crew of a WW2 Dakota airplane. We climb steeply to White Sheet Hill which gives us extensive views over the countryside. We will walk over some of the plains before gradually descending through farms and open fields. We climb again and join the Mid Wilts Way long distance trail through large fields with sheep and cattle across the plains to a gradual return to Mere on quiet tarmac roads for approx half a mile. Possible exposure to strong winds but with extensive views. Dog friendly.

Thursday 8th August

West Mendip Walkers moderate 12 mile circular walk from Sand Bay car park (BS22 9SE). The route heads north along the beach to the National Trust Sand Point with views of Sand Bay, Flat Holm, Steep Holm and Birnbeck pier. A few steps and slight incline initially then walk out along Swallow cliff, rocky and uneven under foot in some areas and if wet could be slippery, then back via Middle Hope and the field system. Head south to Woodspring Priory (remains of Augustinian priory) with the mudflats to the east and then via a very quiet lane followed by open fields and a section of bridleway to Worle Hill. Walk along a footpath through Worlebury Golf Club, and a short walk through a residential area and then into Ashcombe Wood and Weston Woods. Head through the woods back to Sand Bay. Dog friendly but would need to be on a lead in most areas due to livestock and terrain. Only 1 ladder stile on the walk for anyone adventurous and also a gate next to it for those who aren't.

West Mendip Walkers moderate 8 mile, circular walk starting in The Furlong, Axbridge (BS26 2JH). We walk through Axbridge to join the cycle path, and follow this up to Kings Wood before joining the West Mendip Way to Crook Peak. All the climbing is done at the beginning of the walk, once we get down to the "levels" we stay there to the end. As far as dogs are concerned, if cattle are grazing ( and we do pass through a fair number of pastures ) they will need to be on lead There are a few stiles but all are " dog friendly."
