Launching at the upcoming 818th Wells May Charter Fair, Charles Heal and Sons Big Shows by local authors Richard Green and Guy Belshaw deals with the former Glastonbury businessman, philanthropist and showman who did so much charity work at his fairs.

This included during WW1 raising enough funds to purchase an ambulance for the St John's Brigade and during WW2, he and his fellow showmen purchased a Spitfire, while locally for Wells he held many benefit nights for the extension to the former Wells Cottage Hospital.

THE owners of the King's Head in Wells High Street are hoping that the pub can be reopened.

A spokesperson from Star Pubs & Bars said: "The King's Head, Wells, is in need of refurbishment and we want to invest in it to create a great pub for the local community, retaining the traditional features and character of this beautiful building whilst creating new areas for coffee, dining, with an emphasis on locally sourced food, and a beautiful courtyard garden.

WELLS Art Contemporary (WAC) is holding its exclusive international exhibition of shortlisted works of art at Wells Cathedral from July 20 to August 11.

The WAC exhibition is part of the Cathedral's policy of social and community engagement and is set to be a key part of the calendar.

It will take place during the summer period when Wells is at its busiest, with more than 20,000 people expected to visit the Cathedral.

LOCAL cake artist Zoë Burmester is one of the cake designers soon to be seen on Channel 4's Extreme Cake Makers.

Some of the filming took place in the Bishop's Barn, Wells, featuring a swan lantern cake that Zoe made after being commissioned for the Wake Up Wells Lantern Parade earlier this year.
