Aaron Cook in action for Wells

This was a Jekyll and Hyde sort of game, the supporters from both Wells RFC and Imperial on tenterhooks as the match see-sawed one way and then the other.

There were plenty of tries, four from Wells and five from the visitors Imperial, but for the neutral the game was probably a bit underwhelming.

It was a stop-start sort of match, plenty of penalties and not long after the start the match had to be switched to an adjoining pitch due to a serious ankle injury to a visiting player. The Wells club wish him a speedy recovery.

Thereafter the game progressed and the excitement was maintained because no team was able to dominate.

Imperial had a strong pack and were especially strong at the lineout, whereas Wells wobbled a bit, but each team seemed to exert a stranglehold, stopping the game from flowing and the numerous stoppages did not help.

It goes a long way to show how close the game was, that there was never more than a score between the teams in the entire match, even the yellow cards were even, one each.

First half tries for Wells by Al Knight, Sean Garret and Al Payne, with a conversion from Aaron Cook, gave Wells 17 points. Imperial, three tries, one conversion, 17 points.

The second half was equally close, Mike Dimaline scored for Wells, Cook converted but two tries for Imperial put them in the driving seat, then a penalty from Cook kept it close.

With two minutes to go, Cook kicked another penalty to give Wells the spoils by a solitary point. The final score was Wells 30 – Imperial 29.

One has to give credit to both sets of players for their efforts in the heat, this was not the easiest of games to play in and as the majority of the large crowd were Wells supporters, they went away happy, Wells have now wiped out the five point deficit they had to carry over from last season.

A word of thanks to the lunch sponsor, Mike Phelps, as nearly 100 people sat down to a splendid meal.

This Saturday it is what appears to be a tough trip to Minehead. Two game, two wins so far.
