Wells has been ranked third in a list of Britain's smallest cities by Telegraph Travel.

The Somerset city was placed just behind Bath and Canterbury in the ranking, which highlights historic destinations across the UK known for their character, architecture and visitor appeal.

The guide praised several of Wells' best-known landmarks, including Wells Cathedral, Vicars' Close and the Bishop's Palace.

Celebrating Wells' historic landmarks

The article highlighted Wells Cathedral as one of the city's most striking attractions, alongside Vicars' Close, believed to be the oldest residential street in Europe still in use for its original purpose.

The Bishop's Palace and Gardens were also noted as key sights for visitors exploring the city.

Other historic features mentioned include Penniless Porch and Bishop's Eye, both part of Wells' medieval heritage near the Cathedral precinct.

Wells' role on the big screen

The Telegraph Travel feature also highlighted Wells' appearances in film and television.

Scenes from the comedy film Hot Fuzz, the BBC historical drama Wolf Hall and the series Poldark have all been filmed in the city.
