Eleven internationally renowned musicians are set to perform in Wells next year as part of a new initiative, Maestro, hosted by Wells Cathedral School.

The monthly series, beginning in January 2025, will bring world-famous artists to Cedars Hall, a 250-seat venue, for intimate performances, workshops, and masterclasses.

Bill Lloyd, Wells Cathedral School's head of programming and outreach, said: "The Maestro series is really about enabling visitors and young musicians to hear some of the most talented and widely acclaimed international artists right here in rural Somerset."

The programme will feature a mix of classical solo recitals, duos, string quartets, and songs, alongside jazz and pop performances.

The series opens on 9 January with British cellist Steven Isserlis, followed by pianist Mitsuko Uchida on 13 February.

Mr Lloyd added: "This is such a coup for Cedars Hall. Mitsuko plays in Vienna, Berlin, Paris, Amsterdam, London, New York, Tokyo… and now Wells."

The visiting musicians will also run workshops and masterclasses for talented students at Wells Cathedral School.

Alex Laing, the school's director of music, said: "They recognise it's an opportunity to nurture the next generation, and to acknowledge the help that they received themselves on their musical journey."

Tickets for the Maestro series are on sale now, starting at £25, with free entry for under-18s.
