Police have ramped up patrols in Wells city centre after five shoplifting incidents were reported in the space of four weeks — three involving known offenders.
Wells High Street has been named a priority area under the Avon and Somerset Neighbourhood Guarantee, which brings extra boots on the ground to tackle persistent problems. Officers from the Wells Neighbourhood Team and Special Constables are now carrying out high-visibility patrols in and around the city centre.
The update was confirmed on 2 November, with police saying shoplifting remains a concern for local traders. Business owners recently met with police to discuss joint efforts to reduce thefts and improve reporting.
A police spokesperson said: "We know shoplifting causes real frustration for retailers. We're targeting repeat offenders and working closely with shops in the city. If you witness anything suspicious, let us know — your information helps us act."
Additional measures are being considered, and police say updates will follow once new plans are confirmed.
Retailers are urged to report all incidents, no matter how minor, either online or by calling 101.
