Wells shoplifters in police sights as CCTV leads mount
By Laura Linham 1st Apr 2026
Shoplifters are firmly in Wells police's sights after fresh CCTV enquiries led to a string of positive identifications in the city centre.
In the latest update on the town's ongoing shoplifting problem, officers said Wells Neighbourhood Policing Team is keeping up a visible presence in the city centre with regular patrols and public beat surgeries.
Wells High Street remains at the heart of the crackdown, with police continuing to focus on the area as concerns persist over the impact shoplifting is having on traders, staff and confidence in the city centre.
The newest update, dated 22 March, says officers are working closely with local businesses so new problems can be picked up quickly and dealt with faster.
Police also said recent CCTV enquiries have resulted in several positive identifications of offenders, with investigations now being pushed forward.
As part of the response, officers have been holding Beat Surgeries in prominent locations, giving residents the chance to raise concerns directly and get crime prevention advice.
Shoplifting has already been flagged as one of Wells' policing priorities for 2026, with police saying the issue continues to have a damaging effect on businesses and the wider city centre.
