Wells Neighbourhood Policing Team says it is stepping up action in rural villages after an increase in speeding reports from Community Speedwatch (CSW) volunteers across the area.
Officers are now working with CSW groups to deter drivers and address concerns raised by residents. Warning letters will be sent to registered keepers identified by CSW, and follow‑up visits arranged where persistent speeding is reported.
Police remind drivers that speed limits are maximums, not targets, and that slower speeds help protect pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders in rural communities.
Those caught speeding by police or enforcement cameras could receive a Fixed Penalty Notice, be offered a speed awareness course in some cases, or face court proceedings for excessive or repeat offences.
In recent weeks the beat team has carried out speed checks across rural roads, supported CSW sessions, and conducted high‑speed driver visits to reinforce safe driving advice. Officers say they will continue proactive checks and encouraged residents to raise concerns via Community Speedwatch reporting.
