Wells and Mendip Hills MP Tessa Munt has called on the Government to cut planned rises in business rates for hospitality and high street businesses and provide immediate clarity on future support.

The Liberal Democrat MP made the demand during a visit to The Beer Shed in East Huntspill, amid growing concern among Somerset business owners over affordability and uncertainty heading into 2026.

Ms Munt also backed her party's proposal for an emergency VAT cut for hospitality, which she said would ease pressure on local families and revive high street spending across the region.

"Many businesses are deeply concerned, and my colleagues and I are calling on the Government to respond today by announcing support for all hospitality businesses, including a VAT cut to boost our high streets," she said.

"This is a pivotal moment for Ministers, and it is imperative that they provide the clarity that these businesses need."

Ms Munt highlighted the importance of local venues, noting she often holds constituency surgeries in pubs. Hospitality firms across Somerset have faced rising costs, with energy, wages and supplies putting many small operators at risk.

Concerns have grown in Wells, Glastonbury and across Mendip that without intervention, more venues could be forced to reduce hours or close altogether.

The Liberal Democrats are pressing the Government to confirm its business rate policy before the next financial year begins in April, to allow owners to plan ahead.

The Treasury has not confirmed whether changes to business rate rises will be announced.
