Wells residents urged to try Parkinson’s ‘exercise snacks’

People in Wells and across Somerset living with or connected to Parkinson's are being encouraged to get moving this summer – without needing to clear an hour in the diary or head for a gym. Parkinson's UK has launched a series of bite-sized exercise videos aimed at making physical activity more accessible and less daunting.

Called Movement Your Way, the online programme features 21 workouts covering everything from breathing and mindfulness to walkouts and press-kick combinations. Developed with content creators 1FitLife, the sessions are designed for different levels of fitness and experience and can be repeated and adapted.

Wells Parkinson's exercise programme launches for summerThe charity describes the approach as "exercise snacking", with shorter bursts of activity intended to fit more easily into everyday life. The videos are led by four instructors – Adam, Ahmed, Kev and Yanar – who guide users through each routine step by step.

Parkinson's UK says being active can help people living with the condition with balance, coordination, strength, flexibility and mobility, as well as supporting wellbeing. Its physical activity resources also include advice for people considering how to become more active safely.

Anna Castiaux, physical activity programme lead at Parkinson's UK, said the aim was to give people more choice over how they exercise.

"Being active with Parkinson's is all about finding the activities and movements that work for you, and my hope is that more people diagnosed with the condition will be able to take advantage of our new step-by-step programme," she said.

"Movement Your Way is all about having a menu of bitesize exercises that anyone can do, regardless of experience or activity level, plus it's designed to be repeatable and adaptable.

"If you've never thought about being active with Parkinson's, or if you're looking at new ways to get started, then I'd encourage everyone to give Movement Your Way a try."

Jessica Overton, managing director at 1FitLife, said shorter sessions could make activity seem more achievable for people whose symptoms, energy levels or confidence fluctuate.

"We know that shorter, more approachable sessions can feel far less overwhelming and much easier to return to consistently," she said. "That's why every video was designed to be accessible, supportive and achievable, while still helping people feel the benefits of movement."

Parkinson's is a progressive neurological condition with more than 40 possible symptoms. Parkinson's UK says around 166,000 people are living with the condition in the UK, with somebody diagnosed approximately every 20 minutes.

There is currently no cure, and the charity says the number of people living with Parkinson's worldwide is expected to double to 25 million by 2050. Parkinson's UK funds research as well as providing information and support for people affected by the condition.
