Wells Recreation Ground gets drought-resilient planting beds
By Laura Linham 14th Apr 2026
Wells Recreation Ground has had a green makeover — with tough new planting brought in to cope with hotter, drier conditions.
Wells City Council said two new beds had been introduced at the site as part of its commitment to the Act to Adapt Plan. The idea is not just to make the space look better, but to show the kind of drought-resilient planting that could become more important in future.
The council said signage will also be added so people using the recreation ground can identify species, understand where they grow best and learn more about why they were chosen. Many of the plants were selected because they are local species.
Councillor Denise Denis said the scheme was a chance to combine learning with something visual in the space.
She said: "Following the Council's recent commitment to Act to Adapt and climate response, this planting scheme offers a chance for learning at the same time as offering something visual within the space. It has been a pleasure to work with the Somerset Wildlife Trust and the City Council team to deliver this project."
Guy Braga, of Somerset Wildlife Trust, said the project brought a double benefit.
He said: "This project offers dual benefit of education and physical change. The Somerset Wildlife Trust is pleased to be able to work proactively with Wells City Council to meet climate and educational initiatives."
