Wells Royal Charter to go on display at Town Hall
By Laura Linham 13th Apr 2026
Wells is set to put one of its most treasured historic documents on public display — but only for a limited time.
The Royal Charter of King John will be on show at Wells Town Hall on Saturday, 16 May 2026, as part of the council's Mayor Making service. The charter, granted to the city in 1201, is now 825 years old and is normally kept under lock and key in the city archives.
Wells City Council said the document is considered one of the city's most important historical records. On the day, it will be displayed alongside civic regalia and other exhibits explaining the significance of the items used in the city's traditions.
Anyone hoping to catch a glimpse of the original will need to time it right. Access to the charter itself on 16 May will be limited to between 11am and 4pm.
But there is a wider chance for people to explore the history around it.
The council said displays linked to the charter, along with a replica version, will also be available in the Town Hall from 25 April to 27 May during normal opening hours.
The exhibition is designed to give visitors a closer look at the city council's history, Mayor Making and other civic traditions tied to Wells.
