Wells plans new 20mph limits and changes to parking
By Laura Linham 16th Oct 2026
Four roads in Wells could get 20mph limits under proposals now open for public comment. Wells City Council's consultation also covers changes to parking restrictions, loading bays and disabled parking provision.
Wookey Hole Road, Ash Lane, Kennion Road and Milton Lane are earmarked for the lower limits. The council says these would address pedestrian safety concerns around schools, particularly for children walking to and from lessons.
Changes are also proposed around Blake Road and Welsford Avenue, where the speed limit is higher than in surrounding residential streets. The scheme has been developed with Accessible Wells and Somerset Council.
The parking proposals would increase the overall number of disabled spaces and change existing bays and restrictions. They also cover how loading bays are used.
Residents, businesses and other interested parties have until Wednesday, 11 November, to respond. The four-week consultation opened on Wednesday, 14 October, and no decisions have yet been made.
Feedback will be considered before the proposals go to Wells Full Council on Thursday, 26 November. The city council's recommendation will then be submitted to Somerset Council, with approved changes potentially introduced over winter.
This is one phase of a wider programme, with other parts of Wells potentially considered later. Any further proposals would be assessed individually.
Residents can view the details and respond through the council's consultation page. Paper questionnaires are available from reception at Wells Town Hall.
The council says comments must be submitted through the questionnaire to count as formal responses. Views posted on social media or elsewhere will not be included in the consultation.
