Wells City Council has named retired Coldstream Guardsman Philip Dickson as the new Town Crier — with a formal handover planned ahead of Len Swales' retirement next year.

Dickson, who most recently served as Band Sergeant Major in the British Army and now volunteers with local charities, was sworn into the King's Body Guard in May. He'll now become the voice of Wells, following in the footsteps of one of the city's most recognisable figures.

Len Swales, who has served as Town Crier for a quarter of a century, will step down in May 2026. A nine-month handover is now underway to help Dickson get to grips with the role, from civic ceremony to street proclamations.

Cllr Louis Agabani, the Right Worshipful the Mayor of Wells, paid tribute to Swales and backed Dickson to carry on the city's proud tradition:

"We are deeply grateful to Len for his dedication, energy, and unmistakable voice that has echoed through our city for a quarter of a century.

"We look forward to welcoming Phil into the City's Civic role of Town Crier. Whilst he knows that he has big shoes to fill, I have every faith that he will do so diligently and will work to make the role his own, ensuring traditions are maintained and where possible further enhanced for the future."

A public ceremony will be held to mark the handover — with full details to be announced by the council.
