Wells Moat Boat Race saved by volunteers
By Laura Linham 15th Apr 2026
A band of volunteers has stepped in to save the Wells Moat Boat Race after organisers warned the long-running event was under threat.
Fifteen people gathered at St John Ambulance HQ in Wells to offer first aid support for the popular August Bank Holiday race, with more volunteers also promised.
The Wells Lions Club has led the event for years, but the group said it is now down to just five active members and had issued a plea for help.
The new team is being chaired by Lions president Mary Ellis, who said: "I am delighted that groups from the wonderful community in Wells are coming together to organise this very special Wells event. Thank you all."
Key roles have now been shared out among the volunteer group.
Dan Currie will organise the launch crew. Glastonbury and Street Sea Cadets will lead the water safety team. Nathan Rowe will oversee the race schedule and entries, while Joe Miller will organise the trophies.
Wells City Council is also backing the event, with support on health and safety and legal advice.
Town clerk Haylee Wilkins said: "The City Council is pleased to be able to help revive and support the Moat Boat Race. And we are looking forward to working in partnership with multiple agencies to ensure this year's event happens, and hopefully many more to come."
The Moat Boat Race is one of Wells' best-known community events and takes place over the August Bank Holiday. The latest show of support means organisers are now working to make sure it returns this year.
