Wells is preparing for a full programme of Remembrance this year, with poppy stalls, church services and a city-centre parade set to take place across Somerset's smallest city.
The Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal will run from Thursday, 23 October to Tuesday, 11 November 2025, with stalls in the Market Square on 25 October, 1 November and 8 November. Poppy tins and merchandise will also be distributed to major supermarkets, businesses and primary schools across Wells.
Volunteers and businesses who want to support the appeal are being urged to get involved by contacting the local branch.
The Somerset Festival of Remembrance will be held at Wells Cathedral at 7 pm on Saturday, 1 November, with tickets available through the cathedral and Eventbrite.
On Remembrance Sunday, 9 November, a service will be held at St Cuthbert's Church followed by a parade to the Harry Patch Memorial, featuring veterans, cadet forces, Scouts and Guides. Veterans wishing to take part should form up with the Legion on St Cuthbert Street after the service.
Wreaths can be purchased via the Poppy Shop or through the local RBL branch. Those wishing to lay one during the service must contact the branch or church in advance to be included in the order of service.
A short Act of Remembrance will take place at 11 am on 11 November at the Conduit in Wells Market Square. Wells Cathedral will also mark both Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day with services at 11 am on 9 and 11 November, including one during its 10.30 am Eucharist.
