Volunteers in the Mendip district are being asked to step forward to help local people reach hospital appointments, as the rural transport gap widens.

Mendip Community Transport, which last year facilitated around 1,660 journeys for patients needing travel support, says increasing demand means more volunteer drivers are urgently needed. The charity says that without enough drivers, some people go without transport.

The role involves using your own car, choosing the days you can commit, and receiving mileage payments from your home. The charity emphasises flexibility, noting that drivers can give as much or as little time as they're able.

They say the service is vital for residents of towns and villages such as Wells, Shepton Mallet, Glastonbury and the surrounding Mendip Hills who may otherwise struggle to travel to hospitals in Bath, Bristol, Yeovil or Taunton.
