A bank in Wells is set to close its doors for the last time next summer.

HSBC has confirmed 114 of its banks will close due to changing customer habits - with some now serving fewer than 250 customers a week. The company's branch in Wells is set to close its doors as part of the changes, with the closure is due to take place on June 20th, 2023.

The closure will mean that the nearest open HSBC bank will be Bridgwater - around 45 minutes away from the city.

Announcing the closures, the bank said 97.5% of all its banking transactions now take place online. The number of people visiting physical branches has fallen 65% in five years, according to the company, with the coronavirus pandemic playing a role in the changes to banking habits.

HSBC UK managing director of UK distribution Jackie Uhi said: "People are changing the way they bank and footfall in many branches is at an all-time low, with no signs of it returning. The decision to close a branch is never easy or taken lightly, especially if we are the last branch in an area, so we've invested heavily in our 'post closure' strategy, including providing free tablet devices to selected branch customers who do not already have a device to bank digitally, alongside one-to-one coaching to help them migrate to digital banking."

Banks and building societies have closed (or scheduled to close) 5,233 branches since 2015, according to research from consumer champion Which?.
