Wells High Street shoplifters face 2026 police crackdown
By Laura Linham 26th Jan 2026
Police in Wells are stepping up patrols in the city centre as shoplifting remains a top priority for 2026.
Wells High Street has been named a hotspot by the Neighbourhood Policing Team, who say persistent thefts are damaging businesses, frightening staff and eroding public trust. The move comes after continued calls from traders and residents for tougher action.
Officers have vowed to maintain "focused and consistent" operations this year, with extra patrols, more uniformed officers and stronger links with shopkeepers.
The area is now under the Neighbourhood Policing Guarantee, meaning extra resources are being thrown at the problem.
Police said they would continue to arrest offenders and work with local businesses to share intelligence and tackle repeat offending.
In 2025, officers held multi-agency meetings, made arrests, and secured charges against known shoplifters. They now say that work will be ramped up through 2026 to keep the pressure on.
