Wells City Council has cancelled this Saturday's market in the Market Place because of forecast exceptionally high winds.

The announcement refers to the market due to take place on Saturday, 24 January, with organisers saying safety must be the priority.

In a social media post, the council said that having to cancel two markets in such a short time was unprecedented but that wind gusts expected over the weekend reached levels rarely experienced in Wells. They warned that setting up and taking down stalls or gazebos would not be safe for traders, staff or visitors.

The council said it was "very disappointed not to see you this week" but stressed that safety comes first and thanked everyone for their understanding and continued support.

Organisers said they are very much looking forward to welcoming people back next week, when they hope for calmer conditions and a return to normal market life.
