Wells Bishop's Palace entrance changes during Gatehouse works
By Laura Linham 15th May 2026
Visitors to The Bishop's Palace in Wells will face a temporary entrance change next week as conservation work begins at the historic Gatehouse.
Scaffolding will be installed at the rear of the Gatehouse on Monday, 18 May and Tuesday, 19 May.
The Palace and gardens will remain open as normal, but public entry will be via the gates on Moat Walk only during those two days.
Volunteers will be stationed on Palace Green to help direct visitors.
The Bishop's Brew horsebox café will also move to Palace Green, serving takeaway food and drink while the work is taking place.
Access to The Bishop's Table café will not be possible without a day ticket during the installation.
Once the scaffolding has been installed, visitor access will return through the Gatehouse as usual.
The scaffolding is expected to stay in place for around 10 weeks while roof and chimney works are carried out.
The Palace has said the work is part of essential conservation to help protect and preserve the building.
Visitors are being warned that the project will be noisy, although efforts will be made to keep disruption to a minimum.
While scaffolding is in place, people are also asked to be aware of moving vehicles passing through the Gatehouse.
Children should be supervised around the scaffolding.
The swan bell will remain accessible, with no scaffolding on the front of the Gatehouse or within the moat.
