To combat the environmental impact of single-use cups, the Bishop's Eye café in Wells Market Place has introduced an innovative solution: Returnable Cups.
This initiative addresses the staggering fact that people in the UK use at least 2.5 billion single-use cups annually, most of which end up in landfills.
The Returnable Cups, designed for durability, can withstand over 500 wash cycles.
This means they could last approximately 18 months for daily coffee drinkers.
Louis Agabani, the owner of the café, emphasised the sustainability of these cups, noting that they are "100 per cent recyclable up to six times". This implies that no new material is needed for up to nine years, significantly reducing environmental waste.
The cups are produced by Circular&Co., a Cornwall-based company, reflecting a commitment to local sourcing and environmental responsibility.
The café has phased out single-use options for takeaway hot drinks. Instead, customers can pay a £1.50 deposit to use a reusable cup. They can then return it to the café for a refill or a refund.
