Shoplifting down but burglary rises in Wells crime update

Wells saw a slight increase in reported crime in June, with 80 offences recorded, just one more than in May.
Shoplifting fell noticeably, from 21 cases in May to 15 in June. Public order offences, which include threatening or abusive behaviour in public, also dropped from 9 to 6.
However, burglaries rose from 1 to 4. This category includes break-ins at homes, sheds or businesses. Criminal damage and arson cases also increased slightly from 3 to 4, covering acts of vandalism or intentional fire-setting.
Anti-social behaviour remained stable, with 14 incidents each month. This refers to nuisance activity like public drinking, intimidation or noise complaints. Violent crime also held steady at 26 reports, including physical assault and domestic abuse.
Drug offences dropped from 2 to 1, involving possession or supply of illegal substances. 'Other theft' increased from 1 to 5 and includes crimes like stealing unattended items in public. Robbery, which means taking property using force or threats, returned to the log in June with 2 cases, having had none the previous month.
Possession of weapons remained at one case, referring to individuals caught carrying items like knives or firearms. There was also one case each of theft from the person, such as pickpocketing, and 'other crime', which includes a range of less common offences.
A police spokesperson said: "While the overall figures remain steady, we continue to monitor trends closely and respond to any spikes in offending. Our local team remains committed to visible patrols and working with residents to keep Wells safe."
