An applicant is making a second attempt to convert the former post office in Wells' Market Place into an Italian restaurant, aiming to address previous concerns and enhance the town centre's vitality.

The new planning application, submitted on behalf of IB&S Ltd, seeks to make internal alterations to the Grade II listed building.

This proposal follows the refusal of earlier applications (2023/2271/FUL & 2023/2272/LBC) dated 27 March 2024, which were rejected due to concerns about the impact on the character of the listed building and the Wells Conservation Area.

The former post office is historically significant for its contribution to the commercial history of Wells. The proposed alterations are intended to remove utilitarian features from its previous use and create a light and welcoming restaurant environment.

The new application asserts that the planned alterations will not harm the building's historical significance. Instead, they are expected to enhance the town centre by introducing a new dining option.

The plans suggest the involvement of 'Ravello', a restaurant known for offering Italian dining.
