Police target pavement parking in Wells and surrounding villages

The Wells neighbourhood police team is stepping up efforts to tackle pavement parking across the city and nearby villages, following a rise in reports from residents.
Concerns include the danger posed to pedestrians—particularly those using wheelchairs or pushchairs — who may be forced into the road to pass obstructive vehicles.
Pavement parking is also damaging infrastructure, breaking paving slabs and creating trip hazards. In some areas, it has worsened traffic congestion by narrowing already tight roads.
On 10 August, the Wells Beat Team confirmed it is carrying out proactive patrols across rural areas, targeting vehicles parked inconsiderately or in potentially dangerous locations.
Officers have been speaking directly with drivers and distributing leaflets to raise awareness of the risks and consequences.
A spokesperson for the team said the focus remains on education and engagement, but added: "We will not hesitate to enforce the law where offences are identified and grounds exist. This balanced approach helps ensure the safety of all road users and protects access for emergency services, agricultural vehicles, and local residents."
Police are encouraging the public to continue reporting incidents of unsafe or inconsiderate parking by calling 101 or using online reporting tools.
