Police increase patrols as Wells shoplifting concerns continue

Shoplifting remains a concern for police and business owners in Wells, with targeted patrols and partnership work continuing in the city centre.
In response, the Wells Police Neighbourhood Team and Special Constables have been carrying out high-visibility patrols on the High Street and surrounding areas.
These efforts aim to deter theft, build public confidence, and support local retailers.
The issue was recently raised in a meeting between police representatives and local business owners, where ideas were shared on how to tackle shop theft more effectively. As part of the Neighbourhood Policing Guarantee, Wells High Street has been named as a priority area for additional officer deployment across Avon and Somerset.
Officers are also exploring further initiatives to help reduce theft in the area. Updates will be provided when more information becomes available.
A police spokesperson said the team is committed to identifying incidents early and dealing with them in a proactive manner. Engagement with shop owners is ongoing to improve safety and encourage regular reporting.
"We're grateful to the community and business owners for their ongoing support and cooperation," the spokesperson added. "Your involvement is vital in helping us respond effectively to these challenges."
Anyone with information or incidents to report is asked to contact police online or by calling 101.
