New restaurant at former Subhouse building in Wells is planned

A new restaurant could be coming to Wells after a planning application was submitted to Mendip District Council for the former Subhouse site.

The application for the change of use of the existing building to A3 (restaurant and cafe) and A5 (hot food and takeaway) use with a single storey rear extension to replace and extend the existing rear extension at the ex-Subhouse restaurant, Princes Road, Wells, has been made by Anthony Rendell.

The building has been empty since it closed as the Subhouse, and there are no details in the planning application to suggest what the restaurant will be.

However, it is proposed that three full-time and four part-time members of staff will be employed there, and the proposed opening hours are 5pm to 11.30pm Monday to Saturday, and noon to 10pm on Sundays and bank holidays.

Other planning applications in the Wells area submitted to Mendip District Council this week include:

Notification for prior approval to change the use of a shop (use Class A1) to restaurant (use Class A3) at the Post Office, Market Place, Wells, has been applied for by Mr Andrew Forsey.

Proposed works to tree/s in a Conservation Area: T1 (silver birch) - fell at 2 Chamberlain Street, Wells, are wanted by Mr Simon Armstrong.

Application for approval of details reserved by condition 4 (remediation scheme) on planning consent 2018/2941/FUL at Rose Cottage, Wells Road, Priddy, has been made by Mr B Selway.

Approval of details reserved by condition 16 (remediation strategy) and condition 19 (pedestrian link) on planning consent 2012/0700 outline application for residential development (indicative layout of 188 units), including means of access at the former Thales site, Wookey Hole Road, Wells, has been applied for.

Works to trees in a Conservation Area T1 and T2 - Italian Cypress - lop to height of existing fence at 29 Chamberlain Street, Wells, are wanted by Mr Stephen McNulty.

Planning applications in the Wells area decided by Mendip District Council planners this week include:

Conversion and extension of barn to form single dwelling with associated garden and erection of a detached garage building on land adjacent to Shortwood Cottage, Gagley Lane, Easton, by Mr Ian Bryant has been approved.

Change of use of agricultural building to B1 Business use with additional newly erected storage building on land south of Springfield, Veal Lane, East Horrington, by Mr Joshua Hares has been approved.

Erection of a hardstanding for parking and five dropped kerbs at 90 Burcott Road, Wells, by Mr Nicholas Penny has been withdrawn.

Conversion of former farm building to welfare facility and office at Southway Farm, Glastonbury to Wells Road, Polsham, by R M Penny (Plant Hire and Demolition) has been approved.

Prior approval for a proposed change of use of agricultural building to a dwellinghouse (Class C3) and for associated operational development at Callow Hill Farm House, Callow Hill, Wookey, by Mr Stott has been given.

Erection of stud walls to divide room at 78 High Street, Wells, by Mr Paul Leigh has been approved, as has change of use from Class B1 (office) to Class D1 (osteopathy, massage) and associated internal works.

Demolition of single-storey side extension and existing front porch and erection of a two-storey side extension and single storey extension to rear, new pitched roof to existing garage and new porch to front, install dropped kerb to enable new driveway access at 1 Orchard Lea, Wells, by Ms Alison Williamson has been approved.

Application to vary condition 2 (drawings) on application 2011/3068 at 1 Rock Cottages, Chapel Lane to Stockhill, Gurney Slade, by Mr Roger Burge has been approved.
