Historic Wells chapel shines again after stunning restoration

A historic chapel in the heart of Wells has been given a new lease of life after a special re‑dedication service and garden party brought the local community together.
The 15th‑century Bubwith Chapel, part of the Wells Almshouses site, has been fully renovated and is now open as both a place of worship and a space for the people of Wells to come together.
Although always cherished, the chapel has long been a quiet and largely unseen part of the city's heritage, tucked within the grounds of the historic almshouses. Now, thanks to a major restoration project, it will be more accessible for residents and visitors to use and enjoy.

The re‑dedication service was led by the Bishop of Bath and Wells, the Right Reverend Michael Beasley, with the support of Reverend Prebendary Sam Denyer of St Cuthbert's Church and Revd Edward Day, curate at the cathedral. The service was followed by a garden party, making it a truly special day for all who came.
Regular communion services will be held every Thursday from 3 July at 11am, and the Christian Meditation Group will meet on the first and third Tuesday of each month, starting on 1 July. The chapel will also be available for group visits and bookings from local organisations, charities and community groups.
The renovation has transformed the chapel into both a visitor destination and a valuable space for the people of Wells, providing a venue for worship, mindfulness and reflection. It will also host concerts, recitals, lectures, seminars and rehearsals, making it a welcoming space for people across the city.
