From porky pie to full-size guy: Wells pig busts ‘teacup’ myth
By Laura Linham 12th Feb 2026
A pig sold as a "micropet" has grown into a 60kg sanctuary favourite in Wells — busting the teacup pig myth one muddy stomp at a time.
Stompy arrived at Pear Tree Farm Animal Sanctuary in 2019 after being bought as a so-called "teacup pig" — a marketing gimmick that convinces buyers they're getting a pint-sized pal who'll stay tiny for life. Seven months later, Stompy was tipping buckets, tearing round the garden and clearly not stopping anytime soon.
"He was an absolute whirlwind," said co-founder Rebecca Barlow. "He'd race around with the zoomies, tip over water buckets and get into all sorts of mischief. He kept us very busy from day one."
With proper space, fresh air and a muddy patch of Somerset to call his own, Stompy found his groove. He paired up with fellow rescue pig Inca, and the pair were often spotted snuggled up in straw. Inca has since passed, but Stompy's still ruling the sanctuary with muddy charm and a snack-loving snout.
The sanctuary says Stompy's story is no one-off. Pigs are routinely flogged online as low-maintenance pets, only to grow too big, strong or boisterous for the average living room. Many end up abandoned or dumped.
Pear Tree Farm now looks after more than 80 animals — from pigs and ponies to hens and house cats — all rescued from tough starts. It runs on donations and local support, and opens for afternoon teas and tours to help fund the muddy mayhem.
