A new consultation has been launched on plans to block through-traffic for motor vehicles on Burcott Lane in Wells as part of a Somerset Council trial scheme.

The proposal would introduce a modal filter — using bollards, planters or blocks — to restrict car access while keeping the route open to walkers, cyclists, wheelchair users and horse riders.

Two possible closure points have been identified either side of Gipsy Lane. If approved, the changes would be introduced under an Experimental Traffic Order lasting up to 18 months, allowing time for public feedback before any permanent decision.

The council says the aim is to:

  • Make it safer to walk and cycle towards Wookey
  • Improve links to Haybridge, the Strawberry Line and Wells city centre

Residents can take part in the consultation until Tuesday, 24 February 2026 at somersetcouncil.citizenspace.com/highways/greenlanes, or by emailing [email protected].
