Everyone will be a winner at tomorrow's Wells SOUP

How did you spend the £350 Wells SOUP gave you at their October event?

That's the question students from the Blue School Plastic Free and Eco Group will answer at the next SOUP which will take place at 1pm tomorrow (January 11).

SOUP is like a gentle and supportive Dragons' Den with charities the beneficiaries rather than entrepreneurs.

It is a quarterly grant-giving lunch where you enjoy tasty food and good company in the Connect Centre at the junction of Chamberlain Street and Portway.

It starts at 1pm and lasts about an hour, but it is best to arrive by 12.45pm for a good seat. All are welcome and about 100 people came to the last SOUP.

SOUP organiser Ross Young thanked Greenslade Taylor Hunt, the estate agent in Wells High Street, for their generosity in match-funding this SOUP to the tune of £350.

"We are delighted to support SOUP," said the firm's residential manager Sam Powell.

"It gives charities and projects that are here for the people of Wells and the local community, a platform to spread their word and raise valuable funds.

"We wish those presenting on January 11, and the other 59 helped since SOUP started, all the very best for 2020 and beyond."

The four to present this Saturday, January 11, are:

We Hear You, who provide counselling for people with cancer and life threatening conditions, Ageing Well (Age UK Somerset), Friends of Wells Cathedral and Somerset Prostate Support Association.

All four will go away with a cheque. SOUP is organised by Wells Independents and runs every quarter to benefit charities and other good causes that serve the Wells area.

"Five pounds gets you delicious soup, fresh bread, a drink and a vote," said Ross.

"Each good cause has four minutes to share their idea, showing how it will benefit the Wells community – without using PowerPoint or other technology," said Ross.

"The audience then ask questions and vote on which project they think will benefit the Wells area the most.

"Whichever presenter gets the most votes wins half the money collected at the door, match-funded by sponsorship. The runners-up share the other half."

The soups for tomorrow are being cooked at the Blue School's professional quality kitchens.
