Wells City Council has announced the sudden death of serving councillor Tony Robbins, describing him as a highly regarded figure whose loss will be felt deeply across the city.
Councillor Robbins was first elected to Wells City Council in 2007 and went on to serve in a number of senior roles during his time in office, including as Mayor of Wells from 2010 to 2011. Most recently, he was Chair of the council's Finance Committee.
The council confirmed that flags at Wells Town Hall are flying at half mast and will remain so until the day of Cllr Robbins' funeral. Funeral arrangements have not yet been confirmed and will be shared in due course.
In a statement, the council said Cllr Robbins was a well-known and respected member of the community, as well as a colleague and friend to many, adding that his death has been felt deeply within the city.
The Right Worshipful the Mayor of Wells, Cllr Louis Agabani, paid tribute to his fellow councillor, saying: "I know I speak for all councillors and staff of the City Council in saying that the loss of Tony is significant and felt deeply. Tony has served the community of Wells in so many ways, and the loss of his knowledge, expertise and willingness will be significantly felt."
He added: "We all send our sincere condolences to his wife Sylvia and daughter Georgie."
The council said its thoughts are with Cllr Robbins' family and friends at what it described as a very difficult time.
